Leonberger

Leonberger dogs were bred in the Leonberg town of Germany. A city from where they derives their name. They were developed by cross breeding large dogs like Newfoundlands, Saint Bernards and Great Pyrenees to create a large dog that resembled like a Lion.

With large size and lion like mane, they look aristocratic and elegant gait. They are quite friendly and do well as a companion dog who are easy to please.

A Lionberger are massive and can grow to a size of 31 inches and weigh approximately 120 to 170 pounds.

Chow Chow

Chow Chow are also known as Songshi-Quan in China. This means “puffy-lion dog”. They have broad skull, small, triangular, erect ears with rounded tips. They also have a lion like mane which makes it as a very impressive dog.

Apart from the lion like appearance, they are also known for their blue black tongue. They were bred as a hunting dog and are also believed to be used in wars.

Chow chow can grow to a height of 22 inches and weigh an average of 60 to 90 pounds.

Lowchen in German means Little Lion dog. They are small dogs having a big heart of a lion. Their coat is generally given a Lion trim popularly known as “Lion Cut”. This gives that a Lion like appearance as their name suggests.

Lowchen are quite friendly and playful dog who is good for families with children. Though children need to be under supervision or told how to respect any dog. They are an intelligent companion dogs who should not be left behind alone for long as they are prone to suffer from separation anxiety.

Lowchen can grow to a height of 14 inches and weigh approximately 14 to 18 pounds.

Tibetan Mastiff

Tibetan Mastiff is a large dog from the Mastiff family. They are powerful.muscular yet agile dog who would are independent thinkers and may not obey the owner’s command if they think otherwise. Being large and with a mane, these dogs quite resemble a lion.

Tibetan Mastiff were bred as guard dog in the Tibet for the herd. They used to chained in the day and kept open in the dark. Early socialization is required for this dog.

Tibetan Mastiff can grow to a height of 26 inches and weigh approximately 120 to 180 pounds.

Newfoundland

Newfoundland is a large dog breed from Newfoundland region of eastern Canada from which it derives its name. They were bred as a working dog for fisherman and are very good swimmers.

Though being large in size that may frighten, Newfies are calm and docile in nature and hence are also known as “Gentle Giants”. They are good with children as well but children should be with him under an adult supervision as with any other large dog breed.

Newfoundland can grow to a height of 28 inches and weigh approximately 150 pounds.

Caucasian Shepherd is a massive breed of dog from the Caucasus region between Black sea and Caspian sea. They are strong and muscular dog who are quite loyal and highly territorial. Caucasian Shepherd don’t back down from the fight. They are intelligent dogs who can be obstinate as well.They are not recommended fogs for newbie dog owners.

Caucasian Shepherd can grow to a height of 30 inches and weigh approximately 120 to 170 pounds.
